Top 10 tips to get spotted for logistics jobs on social media

More and more companies are using social media sites to look for potential new recruits – and that includes logistics and transport companies. Recruiters look at social media to get a deeper idea about the candidates they are interested in – as well as to headhunt for open positions or to show targeted ads to those whose profiles are a good match.

Think of your social media accounts as free advertising space – you get to show exactly what’s so special about your talents and skills to potential recruiters. Don’t worry, you don’t need to become a marketing whizz to get good at this, just take a look at our top 10 tops for building up and online presence and getting spotted for jobs on social media.

1. Remove any old or irrelevant information about yourself

Before you begin building up a great online profile make sure there isn’t any old or irrelevant information about you floating around on the web. Do a quick Google search of your name and edit or remove things like old social media accounts, photos or online profiles which you no longer feel are relevant.

2. Make sure that your profiles accurate information

Often, employers will be looking to find out a bit more detail about your previous experience so it’s important to provide as much of that as possible. It’s easy to do this on LinkedIn as it has so many options to fill out about your work experience, but you can also enter information about your previous employment and education on Facebook.

What’s shown on your profiles should match up what’s on your CV or job applications so use consistent job titles and have a presence on all the big networks – LinkedIn (Xing if you are in Germany), Facebook and Twitter (you never know which sites recruiters will be using). By filling in as much information as possible you make it more likely you will show up in searches or be shown relevant job adverts.

3. Post the same photo across all of your accounts

Using the same picture across all of your accounts will help people looking at your profiles join up the dots about your experience and remember you. Make sure the photo is a clear headshot and looks professional. It’s best to take one specifically for this purpose with a neutral background.

4. Don’t be afraid to show off your personality

A lot of employers will be looking to find out a little bit more about you to see if you will fit in with the company culture and they may disappointed if your social media doesn’t give them any clues about who you are as a person.

A word of warning here – don’t post anything controversial or that’s likely to cause offence. This includes any references to wild nights out and any inappropriate pictures! But do include things about your personal life that employers might be interested in such as participation in sports, clubs or volunteering.

If you feel uncomfortable making your Facebook profile public you could consider setting up two accounts and only making one public. Alternatively you can choose to categorise your friends in Facebook and create a category for your professional network. Then, next time you post on Facebook you can select who can see your post – either your personal or professional connections.

5. Grow your network

It’s very easy to begin building a network and making contacts through LinkedIn and even easier on Twitter. To make a LinkedIn connection you normally need to have met the person in real life but you can look up companies you are interested in and choose to follow their accounts. Another great way to build connections on LinkedIn is through joining the relevant industry groups. These are often lively discussion forums where you can comment on hot topics or look for advice from other professionals.

Twitter allows you to “follow” accounts to see what others are posted and it’s very common to follow hundreds of different accounts. This makes it very easy to reach out to people even if you have no prior connection. You can follow all the companies you are interested in, and leaders in the industry as well as websites with news and analysis on the logistics and transport.

6. Develop your profile

It’s relatively easy to create relevant content to share on social media. If you feel up to the challenge you can choose to write a short post on a relevant topic and use LinkedIn Pulse to publish it. Or, take a look at some industry groups in LinkedIn and Facebook and make some comments on interesting topics. If you don’t feel confident doing this or don’t have the time you can always just take the option of sharing or re-tweeting relevant articles or posts.

7. Use LinkedIn Recommendations and Endorsements

LinkedIn Endorsements are an easy way for your network to validate your skills and allow your contacts to effectively recommend your skills on your profile. If you aren’t sure which skills to include, try searching for your current (or desired) job role and have a look at a few of the profiles that come up.

For example if you are working as a supply chain manager key skills to include might be

“Procurement” “Project Management” or “Strategic Sourcing”. Or, if you are working as a freight forwarder you might choose “Warehousing” “Import” or “Customer Service”.

LinkedIn Recommendations are a more in-depth reference from a previous manager or colleague and they can be a great way to add authority to your LinkedIn profile and give a sense of how you work.

8. Avoid jargon

Sometimes roles in the logistics industry are highly specific and large companies can have ways of describing jobs which aren’t always clear to others who don’t work there. Although it’s important to always use your official job title, try to describe your roles and responsibilities in a general way that connects them to other roles and sectors in the industry.

Draw out which transferable skills you learned from the position instead of referring to internal procedures or roles. This will help others who are looking at your profile understand your experience.

9. Showcase your “soft skills”

We often think of logistics roles as very logical and analytic but recruiters are also interested in soft skills such as communication and leadership. Social media profiles can be a good space for showcasing these. Remember to check for typos if you want to show off your communication skills!
